<p>J’avais entendu parler du Rabbi de Loubavitch avant de le rencontrer, mais rien n’aurait pu me préparer à cette rencontre.</p>
<p>C’est en 1986 que j’ai rencontré le Rabbi pour la seconde fois, en compagnie du grand-rabbin ashkénaze d’Israël, mon collègue <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="41899">Rav</span> <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="37418">Avraham</span> Schapiro. Il était une heure du matin, mais malgré l’heure tardive et une journée de travail communautaire, le Rabbi était totalement alerte. La conversation couvrit toutes les parties de la <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="39995">Torah</span> : le <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="38919">Talmud</span>, la loi juive, la Kabbale, etc. Le Rabbi passait sans effort d’un traité du <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/2537389/jewish/Talmud.htm" title="Talmud">Talmud</a> à l’autre, et de là à la Kabbale, puis à la loi juive... Il était clair dans tous les sujets et structuré dans ses propos comme s’il venait à l’instant d’étudier ces mêmes sujets dans les livres saints. La <a href="/library/article_cdo/aid/1426382/jewish/Torah.htm" title="What Is the Torah?">Torah</a> tout entière était comme un livre ouvert devant lui.</p>
<p>Les raisonnements tenus par le Rabbi et ses réponses à nos questionnements approfondis étaient d’une sorte qui m’était jusqu’à présent inconnue – clairs et géniaux.</p>
<p>Il y a ceux qui possèdent une vaste connaissance de l’ensemble des sujets de la Torah, mais cette connaissance n’est en général pas approfondie et pointue dans chaque sujet. Rencontrer un grand esprit qui ait à la fois cette érudition et ce degré de maîtrise fut pour moi une expérience inoubliable, un phénomène exceptionnel et rare.</p>
<p> Il faut se rappeler que le Rabbi ne passait pas sa journée à étudier, bien que même si tel était le cas, son érudition aurait néanmoins été unique en son genre. Une grande partie du temps du Rabbi était consacrée à l’action communautaire. Je peux témoigner que le Rabbi se souciait de chaque Juif dans le monde et était actif dans tous les domaines de la bienfaisance et de la charité, tant spirituels que matériels.</p>

<p>D’où une personne tire-t-elle une telle énergie, de telles capacités ?</p>
<p>J’ai ressenti que le Rabbi était un homme saint, doté d’une âme particulière. Il n’était pas un individu pour lui-même, pour ainsi dire. Il était l’âme de tout le peuple juif.</p>
<p>J’ai rencontré dans ma vie de nombreux rabbins et dirigeants juifs. Certains étaient érudits dans toutes les disciplines de la Torah, d’autres étaient des leaders qui concrétisèrent de grandes avancées pour le peuple juif et d’autres encore étaient des justes dont les bénédictions produisaient de grands miracles. Mais je n’ai jamais rencontré quelqu’un qui possède ces trois qualités conjuguées : le génie dans la Torah ; un grand leadership, avec des émissaires dans le monde entier ; et des miracles et des prodiges qui surviennent tout autour de lui.</p>

<p>Les discours du Rabbi sur les sections hebdomadaires de la Torah relevaient toujours d’une approche novatrice enrichissant notre compréhension du texte.</p>
<p>Voici un exemple tiré du livre des Nombres (9, 7) :</p>
<p>« Pourquoi serions-nous lésés ? Pourquoi ne pourrions-nous pas offrir le sacrifice de D.ieu en son temps ? » se plaignirent les Juifs qui ne purent pas offrir le sacrifice pascal en son temps imparti – la veille de Pessa’h – du fait de leur impureté. D.ieu désigna alors une date plus tardive. Ainsi, ceux qui n’avait pu offrir l’agneau pascal la veille de Pessa’h pouvaient désormais le faire à l’occasion du « Second Pessa’h », un mois plus tard.</p>
<p>Le Rabbi donne de cela une explication nouvelle qui rejaillit de façon lumineuse sur notre vie quotidienne. Si ces Juifs, dit le Rabbi, n’avaient pas protesté en disant « Pourquoi serions-nous lésés ? », nous n’aurions pas aujourd’hui de Second Pessa’h. Cependant, Moïse entendit ces Juifs protester, il vit quelle était leur peine. Quand il vit leur peine, il fut peiné lui aussi. C’est animé de cette peine qu’il se tourna vers D.ieu, certain que Celui-ci répondrait en offrant une solution qui donnerait à ces Juifs une seconde chance.</p>
<p>Nous aussi ne pouvons pas rester inertes. Nous devons tous demander « Pourquoi serions-nous lésés ? » Pourquoi ne pourrions-nous pas nous inscrire dans la tradition juive au plus haut degré possible, chacun et chacune selon sa capacité ? Car, lorsque nous protestons, D.ieu permet que les possibilités et les capacités soient exploitées au maximum.</p>
<p>Et les notes de bas de page dans les discours publiés du Rabbi soulignent encore plus son génie, lorsqu’on y voit cette profusion de sources qui s’entrelacent.</p>

<p>Je me suis demandé : quel rapport un homme qui est né en Russie et qui réside à Brooklyn peut-il avoir avec les Juifs marocains de Casablanca ? Quelle relation ce rabbin ashkénaze aux États-Unis entretient-il avec les Juifs séfarades du Maroc ? Qu’est-ce qui le motiva à leur venir en aide ?</p>
<p>J’ai une réponse. C’est parce que le Rabbi aimait chaque Juif. Il se souciait de chaque personne en tant qu’individu et de la nation juive tout entière, pas seulement d’un certain groupe. Et chaque individu était important à ses yeux. Il voulait que chaque Juif suive les traditions de ses parents, que ceux-ci aient été ashkénazes ou séfarades.</p>
<p>Un exemple : lors de notre entrevue en 1986, le Rabbi demanda que le Grand-Rabbinat d’Israël organise des Seders publics de Pessa’h dans chaque ville, de sorte que les gens qui n’avaient pas la possibilité de célébrer le <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="39967">Seder</span> puissent le faire dans un cadre communautaire.</p>
<p>Ces Seders organisés attirèrent des Juifs qui n’avaient jamais participé à un <a href="/holidays/passover/pesach_cdo/aid/1980/jewish/Passover-Seder.htm" title="The Passover Seder">Seder</a>. Lorsque nous constatâmes l’ampleur de l’intérêt suscité par cette initiative, nous nous sommes employés à développer ce projet qui, D.ieu merci, est aujourd’hui actif dans de nombreuses villes et communautés à ce jour.</p>
<p>A priori, quel intérêt le Rabbi pouvait-il avoir dans le fait que des Juifs en Israël participent à un Seder de Pessa’h ? Le fait est que c’était important pour lui. Il se souciait de ceux qui autrement n’auraient pas eu de Seder. Il dit qu’il s’inquiétait pour le « cinquième fils », celui qui ne vient pas de lui-même au Seder.</p>

<p>Le peuple juif tout entier était toujours devant ses yeux. Ses émissaires, qui se trouvent partout dans le monde, font un travail extraordinaire. Le Rabbi est le seul dirigeant que je connaisse qui ait envoyé ses élèves les plus doués aux quatre coins du monde pour aider les Juifs qui s’y trouvent.</p>

<p>Lorsque vous étiez assis en compagnie du Rabbi, c’était comme s’il n’y avait rien ni personne d’autre au monde. Son intérieur était modeste, une chaise simple, un bureau simple. Jour et nuit il étudiait la Torah et agissait pour le bien collectif. Je ne sais pas quand il mangeait ou dormait...</p>
<p>Lors de nos conversations, nos abordâmes de nombreux sujets – dont beaucoup ne peuvent être révélés même aujourd’hui – concernant les épreuves uniques que traverse le peuple juif.</p>
<p>J’ai été fasciné par le fait que le Rabbi connaissait dans les moindres détails ce qui se passait en Israël, comme si lui-même vivait là-bas. Il savait par exemple que dans telle ville il y avait un problème avec le <i>mikvé</i> (le bain rituel), ou que telle région avait besoin d’assistance. Il y a une multitude d’exemples de cela dans nos entrevues, notre correspondance et nos conversations téléphoniques.</p>
<p>Puis, au fil de nos rencontres, je me suis rendu compte qu’il savait ce qui se passe dans le monde entier de la même manière qu’il savait ce qui se passe en Israël. Il savait les problèmes qui affectaient chaque pays, chaque ville – comme s’il y habitait.</p>
<p> Je n’ai pas de mots pour décrire l’honneur que me fit le Rabbi. Le mérite de le rencontrer et le fait qu’il m’ait raccompagné à l’extérieur à l’issue de ma quatrième et dernière entrevue avec lui. Ses derniers mots firent une grande impression sur moi. Après une heure et demie de conversation, le Rabbi exprima sa gratitude et me remercia d’être venu. J’aurais voulu le remercier pour l’honneur qu’il me fit, mais c’est lui qui me remercia.</p>

<p>Le Rabbi n’a jamais mâché ses mots lorsqu’il était préoccupé par une situation. Toutefois, ses paroles étaient toujours empreintes d’amour et de sollicitude. Les dirigeants israéliens savaient que le Rabbi les aimait de tout son cœur, et ils étaient conscients que lorsqu’il leur adressait parfois des reproches, il le faisait par amour pour le peuple juif dans son ensemble et pour chaque personne individuellement.</p>
<p>Je me souviens qu’une fois le Rabbi eut vent d’un complot visant à humilier un Premier ministre israélien. Il fit tout ce qu’il pouvait pour en dissuader les instigateurs. Reprocher des actes, oui ; humilier des personnes, non. Il faut une force particulière pour réprimander et aimer tout à la fois. Cette force découle des enseignements de la philosophie ‘Habad et de son prédécesseur, Rabbi <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="39435">Israel</span> Baal Chem Tov, le fondateur du ‘Hassidisme.</p>
<p>Le Rabbi ne voyait pas de Juifs « pécheurs ». Le Rabbi rapprochait les Juifs, il les acceptait pour ce qu’ils étaient et les rapprochait de leurs racines. Bien qu’il fût un immense érudit, il se souciait activement même des personnes les plus ignorantes.</p>
<p>Lors de nos quatre entrevues, le Rabbi évoquait toujours le mérite d’autres personnes. Quel qu’en fut l’objet, le Rabbi menait la discussion de sorte qu’il puisse faire les louanges d’autres personnes.</p>
</section><section><h2>Derniers mots</h2>
<p>D.ieu fit une grande bonté à notre génération en nous donnant le Rabbi. J’avais craint, cependant, qu’après son décès la structure qu’il avait édifiée s’écroule, D.ieu nous en préserve. Mais, D.ieu merci, il y a une continuation. Il y a un <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="41020">Beth</span> ‘Habad dans tous les endroits où je me rends. Partout dans le monde, même dans les endroits les plus reculés, ‘Habad-Loubavitch est présent, plus encore même qu’avant son décès. Il y a une continuation.</p>
<p> Nous devons toujours examiner nos actions et nous demander : est-ce là ce que le Rabbi me demanderait de faire ? Nous devons nous imaginer que le Rabbi nous regarde, et nous demander : Que dirait-il ? Approuverait-il cela ? Nous devons agir comme si nous étions en présence du Rabbi.</p>

<p>Le Talmud dit : « Notre père <span class="glossary_item" glossary_item="40020">Jacob</span> n’est pas mort ». Les Sages demandent alors, qu’est ce que cela veut dire qu’il n’est pas mort ? Ils l’ont enterré et prononcé son éloge funèbre ! Le Talmud explique alors que, puisque ses enfants sont vivants, lui aussi est vivant. Par le fait que ses enfants font des bonnes actions et suivent son chemin, Jacob est encore vivant. Les enfants du Rabbi sont ses disciples. Ils continuent de diffuser le Judaïsme comme il le voulait. Le Rabbi est vivant à travers eux.</p>
<p>Le Rabbi me manque. Il m’est douloureux de me rendre sur sa tombe. Mais le Rabbi nous a laissé ses enseignements, des instructions sur la manière de continuer dans ses voies – et le mouvement ‘Habad suit sa direction.</p>
